Writing, Pecans, Christmas and Fishing

The prompts for the photo scavenger hunt this week are only to choose five of our favorite photos. Several of this are from this week, and the rest are from another memorial time. I hope you enjoy my attempt to weave them together into a bit of a story.

1. November Writers Workshop

The writers group I am a member of meets once a month. Most of the time we have a guest speaker talk to us about some aspect of writing. This past month, however, I had the privilege of leading the meeting, something new to me. Many of our writers only write nonfiction. For the workshop, I had everyone write a short description of someone they knew from their past. Next they had to describe a girl from a painting whom they did not know. Last I had them tie the two characters together in a story. It went over much better than I had hoped. As you can see by the photo, they were quite diligent in their writing.

2. Treats for the Holiday

This photo is my reminder of holiday treats. Pecans are a must (for my family, at least) in pecan pie (duh), butter pecan ice cream, divinity fudge, chocolate fudge and cookies, to name just a few.

3. Family Ringing Bells for Salvation Army 

I love to see families doing things together and enjoying it, especially when what they are doing helps someone else have a better Christmas. Before putting money in the pot, I went to the car for my camera. They were happy to pose for a picture for my 'favorite' prompt.

4. Dreams of Warmer Weather

The cold weather this holiday season has some dreaming of warmer days when they can have fun in the water. This guy, though, was a bit apprehensive about jumping. We watched close to a half hour trying to get up enough nerve to jump. Finally he did, but the thrill ended fast when he cut his toe pretty bad as he landed. Maybe he shouldn't have jumped!

5. Gone Fishing

Joe's dreams of warmer days and water are more toward fishing. We bought a license this year, but only got to go a couple of times. This is all we have to show for it. At least he got a bite!

Scavenger Hunt Sunday 6-9-14

The last few weeks I have been busy helping to organize a writers conference for the Fellowship of Christian Writers group of Tulsa. This was our first conference and we weren't sure what to expect from it. We had around two months to prepare after we made the decision to go ahead with it and set the date for May 31st. We were hoping to have 40 in attendance inspite of the short time we had to advertise.

I am happy to say it turned out better than we expected. We had 42 attendees and some great speakers for the workshops. Our conference bookstore was well stocked and well stocked. By the time I got a chance to take a picture of it, there weren't many books left. That's a good thing, right?

So now that you know why I have been absent so long, and have the pictures to prove it, I will make a feeble attempt to make up for lost time. We left a few days after the conference to get the grandkids for the summer. This weeks pictures came from one of our excursions with them in between thunderstorms.

1. Denim

The trails we walked around the lake today were not even close to dry. I was glad to have chosen denim jeans. They got a little wet and muddy.

2. Light

I can't resist taking photos of the lake when there is such a shimmer on the water. I like the way the light of the sun shines through the treetops.

3. Watch

The clouds were pretty ominous over the lake. We had been under a thunderstorm watch earlier in the day. We were prepared to make a run for the car if one hit. We were blessed with only a few light showers during our hike.

4. Perspective

Joe and I usually go for walks in the woods looking for mushrooms but don't often find many. Today we didn't go with anything in mind but having a good time with the grand kids. We found mushrooms everywhere! 

Many edible mushrooms have a look-a-like that is poisonous so it is a good idea to look at them from several perspectives before choosing to eat them.

 

We were pretty certain that this is a Yellow-cracked Bolete after examining the cap, underside, stem and inside. We concluded it to be edible. 

5. Fuel

We see these oil pumpers everywhere in Oklahoma, although many of them are no longer pumping. At one time, Okies would not have believed there would ever be a fuel shortage.

Writer's Conference in Wagoner OK Saturday, May 31, 2014

The Successful Writer conference, to be held May 31st, 2014, will be hosted by Fellowship of Christian Writers of Tulsa and the Impact Church of Wagoner, OK. 

We have some great speakers lined up like Gina Conroy, Donna Goodrich, Therese Stenzel, and Rebecca Currington and others. There will be 11 workshops to choose from, plus Donna Goodrich will be the opening keynote speaker and will give the closing message.

If you get two of your writer friends to register, you can get your registration free. The two must be preregistered, rather than at-the-door registrations.

Elece Hollis also will be taking headshot photographs of writers at this conference. These will cost an extra $15.00. She says, "I will take at least five shots for you to choose from. We want to encourage all of you to come support us in this effort. If this goes well, we will have more writers conferences in the years to come and it will be a big benefit to all the writers in Tulsa area.

Wagoner, Ok. is north of Muskogee on 69 highway. It is easily reached from Tulsa area by highway 412 east to Highway 69 and then turn south. It is about 40 miles from Tulsa.

The Days Inn Motel is located in Wagoner and several of us will be spending the night before there. Let us know if you will be staying all night there too and maybe we'll meet for supper somewhere.
